Carl Bulling (1822–1909)
Carl Bulling is one of the first lawyers who have postulated the abolition of any husband’s reign over the wife. Nevertheless, so far the legal historical literature lacks a comprehensive treatise of the life and work of the long-time judge and lawyer. There are multiple reasons for this. On the one hand, the work of the first wave of the women’s movement has for a long time received little attention. On the other hand, Bulling’s works are to be located in the intersection of legal history, legal doctrine, family law and legal policy. In addition to legal sources, the author evaluates a wide range of both philosophical and sociological literature in order to honor the personality of Carl Bulling and his significant work.
