The garden belt of Mt Kilimanjaro is still a little Garden of Eden. The Kilimanjaro Friendship Trail takes us 100 km from 1300 to 1700 meters above sea level through this unique landscape. It guides hikers across mountain ridges and through narrow valleys passing health centres, mosques and amazing churches. Along the trail live the Chagga in small scattered farming communities tending their home gardens. With their five layers of cultivation and their intricate irrigation system these gardens are part of a UNESCO world heritage site. If you hike the Trail, you may learn more about the five themes of the route: Sports, Faith, Nature, Daily bread and Medicine. Simple, mostly parish, guest houses will shelter you at night.
