German literary studies has only peripherally explored nineteenth-century olfactory culture, focusing, for example, on deodorized social spaces or scenes of nature with religious connotations. This volume paints a picture of a diverse epoch by looking at works by Raabe, Fontane, and Storm, but also those of Karl May and Georg Forster, who turned smells into exoticisms in travel literature or a mirror of social conflicts and urban spaces.
