The church of Santo Stefano Rotondo in Rome was built in the 5th century under Pope Simplicius and is known for its unusual circular shape, which distinguishes it from other Roman churches. It was built in honour of Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr. The 16th century fresco cycle depicting the suffering of the martyrs is particularly noteworthy. The church has been remodelled over the centuries, but has retained its original architecture. Santo Stefano Rotondo was an important place of pilgrimage and is now an important example of early Christian architecture and art. Visitors can experience both religious and cultural history at first hand here.
