The particular problems and challenges of the preservation, conservation and re-use of historic industrial sites and landscapes have been discussed since several years. During the last decade especially large industrial sites like the ironworks of Völklingen or the colliery and coking plant of Zollverein in Germany gave cause for discussions and international conferences like the "Big Stuff"-Series, which tried to develop theoretical and practical solutions for the raised questions.
