Stalag Luft I in Barth
During the World War II, the German Luftwaffe operated a special prisoner-of-war camp for the crews of downed Western Allied aircraft in Barth in West Pomerania. From 1943, the Stalag Luft I Barth camp held almost only officers. In the first days of April 1945, 9,000 of them were behind barbed wire there. During the night of 30 April to 1 May, the Allied officers took control of the barrack complex. On 2 May 1945, Soviet units reached Barth. Between 12 and 14 May 1945, 300 American bombers landed at the airbase and flew their comrades to the West. The preparations for these repatriations, known as ›Operation Revival‹, highlighted the contradictions between the Allies in the East and West. The book not only describes the history of Barth during that time. It also touches on the air war over Germany and the special aspects of being a prisoner of war in German hands. This English edition has been published to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the prisoner-of-war camp Stalag Luft I.
