Fieras afemina amor
'Fieras afemina amor can be taken as pure spectacle, music and poetry. It may have been to some extent a political allegory of the court of Charles II during the regency of Mariana and her struggle with the second Don Juan of Austria. In any case it is a plea for humane conduct to women and an attack on the old-fashioned attitude towards them. But in its most profound sense it is the story of a man with false values who discovers himself and better values as the plot unfolds'. (Edward Wilson)
