Thomas Nipperdey (1927 - 1992) war Professor für Neuere Geschichte an der Universität München. Er war Fellow des St. Antony´s College in Oxford, mehrfach Mitglied der Institutes for Advanced Study in Princeton und Stanford, Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der American Academy of Arts and Sciences. 1984 erhielt er den Historikerpreis der Stadt Münster, 1992 den Preis des Historischen Kollegs, der als deutscher Historikerpreis vergeben wird.
