Zwischen tschechischer Avantgarde und französischem Surrealismus ist Leben und Werk der hierzulande kaum bekannten Malerin Toyen (1902-1980) anzusiedeln. 1927 proklamiert sie zusammen mit Jindrich Styrsky den Artifizialismus, eine Verschmelzung von Poesie und Malerei. 1934 gehört sie zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der Prager Surrealisten. Nach jahrelangem Publikationsverbot während der Okkupation siedelte sie 1947 nach Paris über. Mit einem ausführlichen Essay von Rita Bischof und Texten von Andre Breton, Jindrich Heisler, Vitezslav Nezval, Benjamin Peret, Frantisek Smejkal, Philippe Soupault, Jindrich Styrsky und Karel Teige.
