Until well into the nineteenth century, East-Central and Eastern Europe were the main destinations for emigrants from German territories. Although these migrations have been researched at a macro-level, a historical anthropological approach has been missing so far. This volume asks about the role played by imaginary constructions in these migrations, which can be described using the "paradise metaphor" – fulfilled dreams and dashed hopes.
