Will my child walk?
This book is addressed equally to parents, therapists and paediatricians. With 594 illustrations, it presents normal child development, together with emerging postural disorders and their diagnosis in children with hypotonia and hypertonia. Particular emphasis is placed on presenting the treatment pathways of these children. The illustrations allow the reader to form an impression of the quality of various movement patterns. Clearly defined descriptions are provided for movement patterns that differ from the norm. The treatment of children with cerebral motor disorders requires a profound understanding of the motor system as a whole. Within these motor patterns, the entire skeletal musculature is activated in a differential manner, from the head down to the feet. They are governed directly by the CNS; in functional terms, they are synergistic in nature, meaning that the agonists and antagonists work together with reference to the motor goal rather than acting as opposing forces (165). The therapeutically initiated activation of the entire musculature also promotes increasing neuromuscular functional diffenrentiation, which has, among other things, a regulatory effect on muscle tone. Treatment helps to bring both hypotonic and spastic aspects of motor function closer to the normal muscle tone. With regard to locomotion, the dynamic interaction between the punctum fixum and the punctum mobile becomes more precise - a key prerequsite for walking unaided. The first chapter sets out warning signs within the description of normal development, allowing treatment to be initiated at an early stage. They indicate when therapy is advisable. Early diagnosis and treatment of motor disorders can help to prevent or reduce contractures and abnormal postures.
