Nicola Mesarites, an erudite scholar and high-ranking official, witnessed firsthand the fall of the Byzantine Empire and its ensuing power fragmentation. The narrative of the sedition of John Comnenus, nicknamed “the Fat”, serves as an allusion to the empire’s decline before its downfall. This volume addresses the need for a critical edition of the text and provides an Italian translation, completed with a detailed commentary.
