Carl Hauptmann’s literary estate contained more than 40 prose texts, written during various stages of his life, all of which were previously unpublished. In addition to the preliminary stages and variants of well-known works there are also completed narratives which are ready for printing. The scope of the subject matter, the stylistic development, the unfliching quest to “recognize inner worlds in life situations and individualities” (H. M. Elstner), all of this becomes especially clear in these texts.
