Recht macht Religion
An underground Christianity is emerging in Iran, which articulates itself as Iranian Protestantism. Its members question the Islamic-political configuration of Iran. They are persecuted for reasons of national security and seek refuge in Germany, among other places. The asylum procedure considers them as (former) Muslims and asks, how “serious" their conversion is to be taken. “Religion” and “conversion” are not simply the object of the examination. Rather, the legal concept of religion helps transforming the Christian into legally processable knowledge. How baptism and becoming a Christian are being dealt with evokes resistance. For years, state and churches have been carrying out the conflict over “the baptism of refugees” as a conflict of competence that cannot be solved.
