This volume is the first to examine the theology of the young Paul Tillich against the background of his academic theological teachers, fellow students and contemporaries. It sketches a picture of the complex theological debates around 1900 and traces the development of theology’s self-image as a science in the first two decades of the 20th century on the basis of the formation of Tillich’s theology.
