Die 1905 von Friedrich von Bodelschwingh d.Ä. gegründete Theologische Schule Bethel ist die älteste nichtstaatliche Ausbildungsstätte für evangelische Pfarrer in Deutschland. Wegen ihrer Nähe zur Bekennenden Kirche wurde sie 1939 auf Weisung der Gestapo geschlossen. Bereits 1945 nahm die Kirchliche Hochschule Bethel den Lehrbetrieb wieder auf. 1979 wurde sie als Wissenschaftliche Hochschule anerkannt und den Universitätsfakultäten gleichgestellt. Seit einigen Jahren baut die Kirchliche Hochschule den Schwerpunkt Diakoniewissenschaft aus.
