In der an kulturhistorisch und allgemein menschlich interessanten Details gewiss nicht armen Geschichte der Mathematik ist die Entdeckung der algebraischen Lösung der kubischen Gleichung in der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts in Italien wohl eines der farbigsten Kapitel. Der Autor übersetzt jene Textstellen der 1546 in Venedig erschienenen „QUESITI ET INVENTIONI DIVERSE" des genialen autodidaktischen Rechenmeisters und Mathematikers Nicolo Tartaglia, des Gegenspielers von Hieronimo Cardano, die von der kubischen Gleichung handeln. … In the history of mathematics, a field certainly not lacking in details of cultural history and general human interest, the discovery of the algebraic solution to the cubic equation in the first half of the 16th century in Italy is without doubt one of the most colourful chapters. The author presents a translation of the texts in the “QUESITI ET INVENTIONI DIVERSE” published in 1546 in Venice by Nicolo Tartaglia, Geronimo Cardano’s rival, which dealt with the cubic equation.
