Innerhalb von zehn Jahren wurden 100 Schleusen, über 70 Dämme sowie zahlreichen Brücken und Brückenkanäle errichtet. Friedrich Schultheis schildert hier detailreich den Fortgang der Bauarbeiten von den ersten Planungen bis zur Einweihung im Juli 1846. 26 Doppelseitige Illustrationen von Alexander Marx geben einen Eindruck von diesem Meisterwerk der Technikgeschichte.
