Roter Orient
The Russian Revolution has thus far mainly been told from a perspective of the Russian centre: Petersburg / Leningrad and Moscow. “Red Orient” takes a different perspective by foregrounding and analysing the activities by “indigenous communists” in Russian colonial Turkestan. Muslims in Turkestan interpreted the unfolding revolution as an opportunity. To them modernising was the opportunities they saw – not national independence. Muslims in Turkestan actively sought out support from the Bolsheviks in Leningrad against reginal opponents to the revolution. With their deliberate self-identification as communists, they sought participation in government and administration. The book highlights the numerous modernising projects instigated by Muslim communists as well as some of the frictions and tensions between political actors at both geographical ends of the revolution.
