“Heimat” (roughly, “home” or “homeland”) is a central topos in Herta Muller’s work. But how have the term and its use changed historically? And how does Muller explore the spectrum of meanings in her writing? This systematic investigation shows that “heimat” is a multidimensional motif that enriches global identity discourse. The study thus makes a productive contribution to critical reflection on the concept.
