Gallipoli 1915. The War in the Southeast 1
The year 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. In contrast to descriptions in German of the causes of the war and the events on the fronts in the West and East, publications on the events in Southeast Europe are rare. The battles at the Dardanelles (Gallipoli) in 1915 are still vaguely present in the historical consciousness, but the events on the so-called Thessaloniki Front have been completely forgotten. Richter has made it his task to deal with both topics in two volumes under the overall title The War in the Southeast. Volume 1 describes developments before, during and after the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915. An introductory chapter on the development of Turkey between the Oriental crisis of 1875 and the outbreak of war in 1914 is followed by a description of the circumstances from the country's entry into the war until the withdrawal of the allies from Gallipoli in January 1916. Finally, Richter describes the history of the official British investigative committee. The account is based on sources and literature from Germany, Austria, France, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Greece and Turkey. Richter's study is thus the first comprehensive account of the events in Gallipoli.
