Das Gilgamesch Epos ist die älteste uns bekannte Gross-Dichtung der Weltliteratur. Grundlage aller heutigen Übersetzungen bildet ein sogenanntes Zwölf-Tafel-Werk, um 1200 vor Christi in Keilschrift auf Tontafeln aufgezeichnet. Als sein Schöpfer gilt Sin-leqe-unninni, der verschiedene Überlieferungen zu einem grossen Epos zusammenschmolz. Als freie Nachdichtung von Hella Krause-Zimmer in eine gestaltete, rhythmisierte Sprache übertragen.
