Das Werk enthält die nahezu unbekannte Erzählung "Hans Dierlamms Lehrzeit" und die autobiographische Erzählung "Novembernacht", die in Tübingen spielt und von Hesse noch während seiner Tübinger Zeit 1897/98 geschrieben wurde.Rolf Vollmann ergänzt diese beiden Texte mit dem Essay "Der Turmuhrenschlosser". Rolf Vollmann wurde 1934 in Treptow geboren und studierte Germanistik und Philosophie. Vollmann ist u.a. für seine Werke über Jean Paul und den "Romanverführer" bekannt. Er lebt in Tübingen.
