In the late Republic and Imperial Rome, tragedy and comedy were not just forms of entertainment. Rather, productions, much like compelling texts and images, played a role in diverse, above all social discourses. The authors in this volume use case studies to discuss the form in which central topics were addressed by looking at excerpts and plays, and consider how the statements made in this way can be understood today.
