Pictura docens
Johann Lorenz Schmidlin (1626-1692), a protestant pastor from Sindelfingen, was a member of a group of scholars assembled by princess Antonia of Wurttemberg (1613-1679), who in 1673 attempted to visualize the concept of universal pansophy through a painting put up in the church of the Black Forest village of Bad Teinach. Schmidlin accompanied the painting with a Latin verse description. – This edition not only makes Schmidlin's work available to the public for the first time, it also makes an important contribution to the study of the intellectual world of 17th century Germany.
