Zwischen 1804 und 1819 schrieb Johann Peter Hebel rund 300 Beiträge für den badischen Landeskalender ›Rheinischer Hausfreund‹, »lehrreiche Nachrichten und lustige Geschichten«, Anekdoten, Rätsel, Schwänke und Ähnliches. Auf Anregung des Verlegers Cotta stellte Hebel selbst eine Auswahl aus den bis dahin veröffentlichten Beiträgen zusammen, die 1811 unter dem Titel ›Schatzkästlein des rheinischen Hausfreundes‹ erschien.
