1989/1990 fiel die Entscheidung das Deutsche Architektur Zentrum in Berlin und nicht wie ursprünglich geplant in der Nähe von Frankfurt (Main) zu realisieren. Gefunden wurde ein Altbau an der Köpenicker Straße aus dem Jahr 1904, der in der Folgezeit um- und ausgebaut wurde. Selbstbewusst wurde die alte Architektur um ein neues Dach und große Glasflächen ergänzt.
