Heinz Galinski wurde 1943 in das KZ Auschwitz deportiert. 1949 wurde er zum Vorsitzenden der Berliner Jüdischen Gemeinde gewählt, 1988 zum Vorsitzenden des Zentralrats der Juden in Deutschland. Er kämpfte entschieden und unerbitterlich gegen alle Anzeichen des alten oder des neu aufflammenden Antisemitismus.
