The major churches are important actors in civil society: even where membership numbers are in decline and societal plurality is on the rise, the contribution made by the church to social cohesion remains central in both town and country. This poses of the question of how the church in flux contributes and can continue to contribute to the different manifestations of social cohesion in urban and rural contexts.
