Für deutsche Literaten und Maler war die Côte d’Azur seit Jahrhunderten ein Magnet der Sehnsucht. Bis 1933. Danach wurde die Küste mit der poetischen Patina zur Zuflucht vieler deutscher Künstler, Sanary-sur-Mer zum geistigen Zentrum der Emigration. Thomas Mann lebte hier und Lion Feuchtwanger, Ludwig Marcuse, Franz Werfel, Bruno Frank. Viele heimatlos gewordene Künstler machten als Besucher Station: Bertolt Brecht, Heinrich Mann, Arnold Zweig, Stefan Zweig, Egon Erwin Kisch. Sanary-sur-Mer war zum Wartesaal geworden, zum Sinnbild der Verlorenheit.
