Der Ulmer Künstler Thomas Kahl wurde als „Brotmaler“ bekannt. Zur retrospektiven Werk-Ausstellung im Stadthaus Ulm legte die Galerie Tobias Schrade den Katalog Thomas Kahl, der unbekannte Forscher auf. Darin zu sehen sind z.B. großformatige, zu Pop-Art-Ikonen gewordene, comichaft vereinfachte Brote, Kahls Brotmaschinen-Installation „Die Große Kumpanei“ und seine zuletzt gefertigten Totentanz-Collagen und kleine Dioramen aus Plastikfiguren.
