Dieser Band befasst sich mit Formen und Funktionen von europäischen wie nationalen Mythen in den deutschsprachigen Schulbüchern Deutschlands, Österreichs und der Schweiz von der Schlacht bei Salamis über den Behaim-Globus bis zum Elysée-Vertrag. Dabei wird auch nach unterschiedlichen Zugängen zum Mythos-Begriff in den Kulturwissenschaften und in der Geschichtsdidaktik sowie den sich hieraus ergebenden Impulsen gefragt. Die Schwierigkeiten der De-Konstruktion populärer Geschichtsmythen werden ebenso diskutiert wie die Tradierungsbedürfnisse und Deutungsmuster, die diese Mythen bedienen. Schließlich loten die AutorInnen aus, wie sich über die Beschäftigung mit Mythen neue Perspektiven für die Entwicklung eines kritischen Geschichtsbewusstseins im Unterricht gewinnen lassen.  This volume draws on cultural studies and history didactics to illuminate myths about historical topics from antiquity to the 20th century found in German-language textbooks from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The contributions delve into the forms of European and national myths in German-language textbooks, as well as their functions for historical culture. The aesthetic dimension of myths is just as central here as the question of their political utility: their mobilising, motivating and orientating force, a myth-driven construction of meaning and identity. The volume also offers a first thorough definition of the term ‘historical myth’ from the perspective of history education research.
