The narrative of Joshua 10 describes the war against five Canaanite kings and their execution. However, references to texts about Saul and the fall of Jerusalem’s monarchy—analyzed within this scope for the first time—suggest that Joshua 10 actually stages a critique of Israelite-Judean kingship. What roles does Joshua, the protagonist, play in this complex narrative? Using E. Goffman’s role theory alongside narrative criticism and intertextual analysis, this study concludes: The portrayal of Joshua in his dominant prophetic role, with the kings as his counterparts in Joshua 10, introduces a constellation that will shape the depiction of Israel’s history in the Former and Latter Prophets: the conflict between prophecy and kingship, centered on obedience and disobedience to the Torah.
