At the start of the 19^th century, interest in pre- and early Renaissance Italian painting grew throughout Europe, especially in Prussia. Hundreds of paintings arrived in Berlin within only a few years. The study documents and identifies these acquired paintings in detail based on newly discovered sources. It uncovers a remarkable network of European collectors, dealers, museums, and politicians.
