Zwischen dynastischem Selbstbild und literarischem Stereotyp
This volume for the first time draws together all Ancient sources on the queens of the Seleucids and the other Hellenistic monarchies of Asia Minor and analyses them from a range of perspectives. Initially, enactments of siblinghood and sibling marriage are connected to the development of dynastic identities. This is followed by an analysis of the extensive entanglements of marriage politics, particularly in terms of their effects on gender roles at the different courts. Finally, we deal with cases in which mothers acted as regents. The overall aim is to ascertain in how far gender-specific normative ideals current in the Roman Empire influenced source transmission. Amongst others, this results in a re-dating of the novella of the “lovesick Antiochus”.
