Nebel lag über der Stadt. Die Ulmer glaubten sich am 17. Dezember 1944 sicher vor einem Luftangriff der Alliierten. Sie sollten sich täuschen: 330 britische Flieger warfen an diesem dritten Adventssonntag zwischen 19.23 und 19.50 Uhr annähernd 100.000 Bomben auf die Stadt und lösten damit einen Feuersturm aus. Mehr als 700 Männer, Frauen und Kinder kamen ums Leben, die Altstadt wurde zu über 80 Prozent zerstört.
