The Hemmaberg, in the south-east of Austria, saw in late antiquity the development of the largest early- Christian centre of pilgrimage in the Alps. The findings at this location are used as the basis in the present study for a discussion of the general characteristics of the material culture of late antiquity in the eastern Alps from the 4th to the 7th century. A first section discusses selected types of finds,which are of significance for the absolute chronological classification and for the characterisation of settlements. A focus is on a numismatic analysis of the circulation of coins from the 3rd to the 5th century, which is tied to a discussion on the problem of the hoard finds which can be dated to the middle of the third century.A second section presents contextualised informative groups of finds relevant for chronology from the western twin-church building on the Hemmaberg.
