Die Verwunderung des Betrachters beim Zeitung lesen
Uli Schaarschmidt paint after reading with the preface of Prof. Dr. Heribert Prantl, chief editor of Sueddeutsche Zeitung German newsprint. “He paints what headlines, photos suggest him. In this matter Freedom of Press and Freedom of Art are corresponding on the same ground. So Uli Schaarschmidt’s paintings are a fest of the fundamental rights.” How did it come to paint on the Sueddeutsche Zeitung German Newsprint? “My newspaper world is a big stage and I add my spice to it... on New Year‘s Eve in 1997 I did the first picture. I discovered a way to express my feelings, questions, suspicions, premonitions which emerge while reading, and which I then add to the medium.” What excites him to paint on that short living, thin paper? “My newspaper paintings are spontaneous answers. Even nudes, portraits and landscapes expand my emotionally charged gestural art. My fascination is with paint application in free sweeping gestures with the brush, yet always grounded in reality.” The art of painting on newspaper or funny searching for truth. An episode of 50 scenes appearing like allegories. Uli Schaarschmidt comes from the Berlin school. From 1980 to 1987 he studied at Weissensee under Bruno Bernitz and Johannes Richter and then as a master student under Alfred Hückler, in cybernetics and aesthetic refining. He works as a painter and designer and is living now in Munich after longer residences in America, Canada, India, South Tyrol, Portugal.
