Birnau by Lake Constance
The pilgrimage church at Birnau, completely redesigned and built within a very short time between 1746 and 1750, can be considered one of the most important of the Southern German Baroque all-embracing art forms. Architecture, altar and figurative furnishings, as well as paintings are interwoven here in a rare form to create a continuum of space. The complexity of artistic formation is reflected in the complexity of the theological and iconographic scheme of the church.
