Walter Vogel studierte in den 1960er Jahren an der Folkwangschule in Essen Fotografie. Dort lernte er Pina Bausch kennen. In dieser Zeit entstanden die heute weltbekannten Fotos von Pina Bausch im "Schwarzen Kleid" oder die Porträts. Eine enge Freundschaft verband Walter Vogel mit der berühmten Choreografin, die im Sommer 2009 verstarb.
