Die Briefe geben Einblicke in die koloniale Lebenswelt eines Offiziers und die Entwicklung des Schutzgebietes bis zum Ausbruch des Herero-Krieges 1904. Woellwarth nahm Teil am „Siegeszug der Kompanie Franke“ und starb am 11. Februar 1904 in Folge einer Verletzung, die er bei dem Entsatz von Omaruru an der Seite von Victor Franke erlitten hatte.
