Bach vertonte in der Matthäus-Passion Leiden und Sterben Jesu Christi nach Texten des Matthäus-Evangeliums. Bach sah eigentlich in der Aufführung zwei räumlich voneinander getrennte Chöre vor, damit die dialogischen Strukturen besser hervortreten. Zudem setzte Bach statt der Frauenstimmen stets Knabenchöre bzw. sehr hohe Männerstimmen ein.
