Ruhmeshalle und Bavaria wurden unter König Ludwig I. von Bayern (reg. 1825-1848) als Nationaldenkmal errichtet. In der von Leo von Klenze erbauten, dreiflügeligen Halle sind Büsten von Persönlichkeiten aufgestellt, die sich um Bayern verdient gemacht haben. Die begehbare Statue der Bavaria hat Ludwig Michael von Schwanthaler entworfen. Der Guss der Kolossalbronze in der "Königlichen Erzgießerei" in München unter Ferdinand von Miller galt seinerzeit als technische Meisterleitung.
