For the first time, this work provides a modern, source-critical edition of the texts (fables, short stories, historical exempla, proverbs and aphorisms, reports on rarities, anomalies and monstrosities as well as riddles) which Sebastian Brant compiled for the second part of his edition of Steinhöwel‹s ‹Aesop‹ from classical and humanistic sources. A modern German translation as well as plates of the woodcuts in the 1501 edition have been included with the Latin text. Brant‹s intentions and methods in compiling the texts, the question of the textual sources as well as the relationship between the woodcut illustrations and the text are discussed in the afterword.
